Why are you blogging about Boxing?

It's hard to find suitable subjects for blogging.

First I have desire to make this a tech blog. So what does boxing have in common with tech? Well there are two answers.

(1)... Nothing -
Boxing does not require any uber 133t knowledge of computers!

(2)... Everthing -
The sport of boxing involves both the low level programming "machine language" or instinct as well as the higher level programming "4th generation language" of the human brain! If you ask me that is really uber 133t!

I used to box and I will admit I wasn't the best but the interest never died. I've been beaten and trained hard. I still dream that I could change myself if I started back but I can't afford to loose teeth, get pummled, get hurt, or just plain let my loved ones go through the pain of seeing me get these things done to me. Well since I study boxing now instead of actually becomming a boxer myself it is a topic dominant in me so naturally I should extend this to my blogging!

Live Blogging The Contender

For those following "The Contender" I thought I would put a spin on webgrits Live Blogging American Idol. Since my interests are more into boxing than karaoke stars here is my version of Live Blogging.

Ishe Smith vs Sergio

I see here that both Ishe and Sergio are "smart" boxers. Why?
Well they are both starting off slow looking for weaknesses and indexing them in their mind. It is much easier to know the reflexes of your opponent when throwing a specific punch towards them now then in the middle of a frenzy of combinations!

Now this disappoints me in Ishee. He was ok to start slow but there isn't any excuse to continue the study phase at the beginning of each round! Sergio however should take this opportunity to step in closer. Ishee seems to have longer arms here. Throwing longer punches makes him slow to return home with his defense!

Ishee is picking up the pace and this satisfies me! It won the 2nd and 3rd rounds for him! He is ahead on points and Sergio looks too cocky.

Now the 4th round isn't a good story for Ishee. This is where I think Sergio seen that stepping in close put Ishee off balance with his punches. Ishee either hit nothing or couldn't mount a defense for Sergio when he was in close at this "sweet spot".

The 5th and final introduced another disappointment in Ishee. He got frustrated! He threw punches wildly and inaccurately! Sergio capitalized on this and "fulfilled his destiny".

Ishee lost due to two main reasons in my opinion. First he didn't keep Sergio "at bay". A longer reach isn't much good if you can't keep a jab in your opponent's face or use footwork to keep him from getting too close to you. Second he got frustrated. When you are frustrated it's easy to forget that boxing is a sport of both mental and physical comparison. The key here is "mental". You become blind to the reflexes and holes being presented to you in the ring and just go with the majority rules concept. "If I throw enough, Hard enough, I'll make him drop!"... or "at least score some points"!

A beautiful weekend.

This weekend was wonderful. Here are some of things I enjoyed over the weekend.

Saturday
1. I got to be awakened with a wrestle with my girlfriend and my dog.
2. I got to go to City Cafe for breakfast.
A real treat for me since they close at 11am and I'm such a sleepy head!
3. I got to go Walmarting...
4. I surprised Kerry by dashing off when she was in the cashier's line.
I picked up some pork chops and fresh corn - dinner tonight is on me.
5. I got to break out my snow cone machine.
6. Hung out on the deck with Kerry and Jackson eating snow cones.
Hanging out listening to the radio - Jackson had to have his own snow cone!
7. Went to check out the motorcycles. I found one I really like!
Now can I just make an excuse for it in my Dave Ramsey influenced budget!
8. Went to Shoe Carnivale with Kerry.
This was fun because she isn't the type to shop to you drop!
9. Had lunch at O'Charley's - Best salads ever hands down.
I recommend the Pecan Chicken Strip salad!
Kerry recommends the Chicken Salad salad!
10. Had a great service at church. Durning Mass I realized I have lots to learn.
11. Got to fire up my grill! :-) Always a blast - Pork Chops and fresh corn!!!
12. Had dinner on the deck with Kerry and Jackson waiting for morsels to fall.
13. Listen to Disco by candlelight during dinner - Wow Kerry knows these songs!
14. Just hung out with Jackson on the deck - playing fetch after dinner...

Sunday (productive with a little fun thrown in)
1. Got to sleep late...
2. Got to have breakfast a Tony's.
3. Done some much needed work around the house...
4. Watch some of the race while working around the house... I hate Jeff Gordon!
5. Spent time relaxing...
6. Watched the Contender! Excellent episode...
7. Described Boxing to Kerry (I don't think she likes me doing this)
For my defense I used to Box and I really get into it!
8. Spici Spicy Meats a Ball Pizza from Papa John's (see this Apprientice story)
9. Continued to watch our shows...

Does our field cause revelations within people?

I am proud to be a computer technician! I was very touched by a story I've been told on a service call this Friday. I hope this touches you too as well as inspire you.

This customer used to be a police officer in Cleveland, Ohio in the late 60's early 70's. He told me the following story while I worked on his computer.

While he walked the street beat there was a guy that was always walking the streets drunk. He was always getting into fights at bars. He was generally a nasty, no teeth, "wino" type of person. He and his fellow officers generally arrested him nightly and would have to take him to jail. He said that the Judge would get aggravated with him and tired of seeing this guy before him in court. He jokingly said that the Judge told the officers not to bring this guy back to jail again! The last time my customer arrested this guy the Judge proclaimed that he was sending this guy away to straighten up his life. My customer didn't know exactly what happened to him after this. It was 8 or 9 months later until he was seen on the street again. My customer said that this time he had teeth in his mouth, was dressed in a 3 piece suit, looking sharp, carrying a briefcase, shaved, dressed to the 9's and generally had a very professional appearance. Oh and this guy doesn't drink anymore either! He was sent away to learn a trade! That trade was to be a computer technician!

Our trade actually saved a person's life, dignity, and respect. It actually has given a person a second chance! That makes me proud to be a tech!
